Elkington Ink Stand, English Silver Plate c. 1860

English Elkington silver-plate ink stand with two cut-crystal inkwells, circa 1860. Features Medusa heads, cherubs, and a frieze of Greco-Roman figures fronting the drawer. The cherubs support a small candle, meant to melt the wax for an official seal. They sit on box that would hold the wax. Two deep wells on the surface hold pens. The skirting to the "cabinet" has friezes on both sides that conceal a stamp and note drawer.
